Try the same shape with a two-digit block: what is 2424 really?
Notice first that 2424 is 24 × 101.
Writing a block twice is the same as making one copy and sliding it left past the other, and sliding a number left in our place-value system multiplies it by a power of 10. That is why a repeat factor always looks like 1 followed by zeros followed by 1.

Why?
Sliding a block two places to the left multiplies it by a hundred, so the two copies are worth a hundred of it and one of it.
Why?
A hundred of it plus one of it can be gathered into a single multiplication, because a shared factor lifts out of a sum.
Slide the block four places instead of two
Slid four places, each is the block × 10001.
The pattern is one rule with a dial on it: a 2-digit block repeated gives x 101, a 3-digit block gives x 1001, a 4-digit block gives x 10001. The number of zeros in the middle is just how far the copy had to slide, so you can write it down by counting digits.

Rewrite the whole expression that way.
Swapping a number for an equal product is always allowed, and it is worth doing here because a product shows its ingredients while an eight-digit numeral hides them.

You never learn what the common product is, and you do not need to: once both sides of the minus sign are the same collection of factors, the answer is 0 no matter how big that collection multiplies out to.

The small copy can be finished by ordinary multiplication in under a minute, so it is a real test of the shortcut rather than a restatement of it.
