Fraction A is proper, and its denominator and numerator add to 20 and differ by 6. Fraction B is improper, and its denominator and numerator add to 38 and differ by 12. Rebuild both fractions and add them.

Strategy Draw a Diagram — "Two numbers add to 20 and differ by 6" is exactly what a pair of bars shows at a glance: draw a short bar and a long bar side by side, and the long bar is the short one plus the extra 6. Chopping the extra 6 off the top makes two equal bars, so one division finds both numbers with no algebra at all. Their sum therefore has to sit between 1 and 3, and 2 6/13 (about 2.46) lands right in that window. As a decimal check, 7/13 is about 0.54 and 25/13 is about 1.92, and 0.54 + 1.92 is about 2.46 - matching 2 6/13. The answer is a pure number with no units, as it should be.
