Counting the covers in the order found gives 6, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1, 0 from top to bottom -- never increasing, exactly as a real pile behaves. The two extremes agree with the picture at a glance: lemon-yellow is drawn whole everywhere and covers six pencils, while the deep golden-yellow pencil is interrupted at every crossing and covers none. The answer is a colour, not a measurement, so no units are involved, and position 6 out of 8 is a legal position.
