Times give equations in reciprocal speeds

A fires at a target 17001700 m away and hears the bullet hit the target 77 seconds after firing. B stands 980980 m from A and 20002000 m from the target, and hears the bullet hit the target 55 seconds after hearing A's gunshot. Find the speed of the bullet. (The bullet and the sound each travel at a constant speed.)

How to solve
Strategy Convert to Algebra — Each time in the story is a distance divided by either the bullet's speed or the speed of sound. Drawing each listener's timeline gives two equations; both contain the same bullet time, so subtracting them leaves only sound.
1STEP 1

Name the two speeds

Let the bullet travel x m per second and sound y m per second. Every time in the story is a distance divided by one of these.

time = distance/(speed)
2STEP 2

Follow A's 7 seconds

The bullet flies 1700 m to the target, then the sound of the hit travels the same 1700 m back to A.

1700/x + 1700/y = 7
3STEP 3

Follow B's 5 seconds

From the shot, the gunshot reaches B after 980/y seconds and the hit sound after 1700/x + 2000/y seconds, 5 seconds apart.

1700/x + 2000/y - 980/y = 5, 1700/x + 1020/y = 5
4STEP 4

Subtract to remove the bullet

Both equations contain the same bullet time 1700/x. Subtracting the second from the first leaves only the speed of sound.

1700/y - 1020/y = 7 - 5, 680/y = 2, y = 340
5STEP 5

Find the bullet's speed

Sound takes 1700/340 = 5 seconds to come back to A, so the bullet took the other 2 seconds of A's 7.

1700/x = 7 - 5 = 2, x = 850
Answer
850 m per second
With x = 850 and y = 340: A waits 2 + 5 = 7 seconds. For B, the hit sound arrives at 2 + 2000/340 seconds and the gunshot at 980/340 seconds; the gap is 2 + 1020/340 = 2 + 3 = 5 seconds. Both match, and 340 m per second is the real speed of sound in air.
Takeaway

When the unknowns sit in denominators, treat each whole fraction as the thing to eliminate -- the system is still linear in those blocks.

  • Name the two speeds
  • Follow A's 7 seconds
  • Follow B's 5 seconds
  • Subtract to remove the bullet
  • Find the bullet's speed
