Strategy Make a Systematic List — For part (1) the whole job is bookkeeping: for each gymnast, line the five scores up in order, cross out the top one and the bottom one, and add the three survivors. Doing all three gymnasts the same way, in the same order, is what stops a mis-crossed score. For part (2) I know the finish (33.76) and not the start, so I work backwards. Before I can subtract I have to settle which two of the six scores were thrown away, and there are only three possibilities for the blank (it is the highest, it is the lowest, or it is in the middle), so I can eliminate my way down to one.

Every answer is in points, to hundredths, which is how gymnastics scores are written. In part (1) three scores of roughly 8 are added, so a final score near 24-26 points is exactly what to expect, and all three totals land there. The ranking also passes a common-sense test: Liam's raw scores look almost as strong as Mia's except for that 6.51, and since the 6.51 is thrown away he still finishes second, not last. In part (2) four scores near 8 should total around 32-36 points, and 33.76 sits inside that band. The recovered 7.08 is between 7.06 and 9.75, so the two scores thrown out really are Judge 6's and Judge 2's — the answer is consistent with the rule it came from, and it also passes a rough check: 33.76 - 26.68 is a bit over 7, and 7.08 is a bit over 7.
