Problem

Train timetables and elapsed time

Two trains of equal speed stop in order at Riverside, Greenfield, Midtown, Lakeview, Harborport. Equal speed means each leg takes both trains the same time. Three cells of the timetable are blank. Find the three missing times.
Your answer
How to solve
Strategy Identify Subproblems — Find each segment's travel time from whichever train shows both endpoints. The two trains share segment times, so a time known on one train fills the gap on the other. Combine the known Train 1 segments with Train 2's Lakeview-to-Harborport segment to recover the missing Midtown-to-Lakeview segment, then work forward and backward to fill every blank.
1STEP 1

Find the early segment times from Train 1

Train 1 gives 30 min for the first leg and 50 min for the second.

7{:}30-7{:}00=30 min, 8{:}20-7{:}30=50 min
2STEP 2

Find the last segment time from Train 2

Train 2 shows the last leg as 80 min, which Train 1 shares.

14{:}15-12{:}55=1 h 20 min=80 min
3STEP 3

Recover the Midtown-to-Lakeview segment

Train 1 takes 170 min from Midtown to Harborport, so taking off 80 leaves 90 min.

11{:}10-8{:}20=170 min; 170-80=90 min
4STEP 4

Fill Train 1's Lakeview time

So Train 1 reaches Lakeview at 8:20 + 90 min = 9:50.

8{:}20+90 min=9{:}50
5STEP 5

Fill Train 2's Riverside time by working backwards

Backing 30 min off Train 2's 10:35 puts Riverside at 10:05.

10{:}35-30 min=10{:}05
6STEP 6

Fill Train 2's Midtown time

Train 2's Midtown is 10:35 + 50 min = 11:25.

10{:}35+50 min=11{:}25
Answer
Train 1 Lakeview 9:50, Train 2 Riverside 10:05, Train 2 Midtown 11:25
All filled times keep each train's arrivals increasing in order (Train 2: 10:05, 10:35, 11:25, 12:55, 14:15), and every shared segment matches: 30, 50, 90, 80 minutes for both trains. Plugging the values back reproduces all the given times exactly.
Takeaway

Same speed means each leg takes the same minutes for both trains, so a time known on one train fills the gap on the other. Just Grade 3 elapsed-time adding and subtracting!

  • Find the early segment times from Train 1
  • Find the last segment time from Train 2
  • Recover the Midtown-to-Lakeview segment
  • Fill Train 1's Lakeview time
  • Fill Train 2's Riverside time by working backwards
  • Fill Train 2's Midtown time
