Count the gaps, then add and subtract

A concert was planned to mix 66-minute pieces and 88-minute pieces so that the whole performance would take 11 hour 4545 minutes. At the orchestra's request, the numbers of 66-minute pieces and 88-minute pieces were swapped, and the performance took 11 hour 5757 minutes in all. There is a 11-minute break between each piece and the next. How many 66-minute pieces were originally planned?

How to solve
Strategy Convert to Algebra — Picture the program as pieces in a row with breaks in the gaps to count the breaks correctly, convert the times to minutes, and write one equation for each program. The two equations are mirror images, so adding and subtracting them is the quickest way through.
1STEP 1

Count the breaks

Plan x six-minute and y eight-minute pieces. x + y pieces in a row have x + y - 1 breaks, and swapping keeps that count.

breaks = x + y - 1
2STEP 2

Write both programs in minutes

1 hour 45 minutes is 105 minutes; 1 hour 57 minutes is 117. The swapped program has y six-minute and x eight-minute pieces.

6x + 8y + (x + y - 1) = 105, 7x + 9y = 106; 6y + 8x + (x + y - 1) = 117, 9x + 7y = 118
3STEP 3

Add the mirror equations

Adding gives the same coefficient on both letters.

16x + 16y = 224, x + y = 14
4STEP 4

Subtract the mirror equations

Subtracting the first from the second leaves the difference.

2x - 2y = 12, x - y = 6
5STEP 5

Recover the counts

Knowing the sum and the difference gives each count.

x = (14 + 6)/2 = 10, y = (14 - 6)/2 = 4
Answer
10 pieces
Planned: 6 × 10 + 8 × 4 + 13 = 60 + 32 + 13 = 105 minutes. Swapped: 6 × 4 + 8 × 10 + 13 = 24 + 80 + 13 = 117 minutes. Both match.
Takeaway

Count the gaps carefully, then let the mirror-image equations do the work: add for the sum, subtract for the difference.

  • Count the breaks
  • Write both programs in minutes
  • Add the mirror equations
  • Subtract the mirror equations
  • Recover the counts
