Place numbers by sign to maximize and minimize

Three numbers, 2/3, 4/5, -2, fill the pattern (first) ÷ (second) - (third). Different placements give different values; we want the largest plus the smallest.

How to solve
Strategy Make a Systematic List — With only six placements we can list them all, but sign reasoning tells us which ones can win. To make the result large, subtract the negative number; to make it small, put -2 into the quotient so it is negative, then subtract a positive. Rule out the rest and compare the survivors.
1STEP 1

Greatest: subtract the negative number

Subtracting -2 adds 2, and the quotient of the two positives is positive; dividing the larger by the smaller makes it bigger.

4/5 ÷ 2/3 - (-2) = 4/5 × 3/2 + 2 = 6/5 + 2 = 16/5
2STEP 2

Least: make the quotient negative and subtract a positive

Put -2 in the quotient. A large-sized negative quotient comes from -2 on top.

(-2) ÷ 2/3 - 4/5 = -3 - 4/5 = -19/5, (-2) ÷ 4/5 - 2/3 = -5/2 - 2/3 = -19/6
3STEP 3

Check the remaining placements

With -2 in the second box the quotient is small in size.

2/3 ÷ (-2) - 4/5 = -17/15, 4/5 ÷ (-2) - 2/3 = -16/15
4STEP 4

Add the extremes

Greatest 16/5, least -19/5.

16/5 + (-19/5) = -3/5
Answer
-3/5
All six values are 16/5, 17/6, -19/5, -19/6, -17/15, -16/15. The largest is 16/5 = 3.2 and the smallest is -19/5 = -3.8; 3.2 + (-3.8) = -0.6 = -3/5.
Takeaway

Decide the signs first; then only a couple of placements are worth computing.

  • Greatest: subtract the negative number
  • Least: make the quotient negative and subtract a positive
  • Check the remaining placements
  • Add the extremes
